I like the looks (brushed stainless steel), big platform (8" x 8"), high capacity (up to 11 lbs. 4 oz.), and low profile of this SMART WEIGH TZ5000 DIGITAL KITCHEN SCALE. Standing only 1/2" high, it hugs the countertop (or in my case, the top of a microwave oven). The slim profile belies the capacity, which is enough for weighing large cuts of meat or small parcel post packages. And because of the generously-sized platform, you can use a medium-sized bowl and still read the weight display when you're using the "tare" feature.

The "tare" feature allows you to place an empty container on the scale, and then weigh only the stuff (fruit, flour, veggies, meat, gold dust, whatever) that you add to the container. When you hit the "tare" button, the weight display returns to zero, so that the weight of the empty container is automatically subtracted from anything you place in the container.

The scale displays weights in grams, milliliters, fluid ounces, or pounds (by tenths). It runs on two CR2032 lithium batteries (included with the scale).

A nice extra is the Smart Weigh Measure Equivalents Magnet Chart, which costs about $5 if you purchase it separately. When you halve recipes as often as I do (in cooking for two), you really like having a refrigerator magnet that tells you the number of teaspoons, tablespoons, and fluid ounces equivalent to measures of 1/16 cup to 1 cup.

My New Favorite Kitchen Scale By Tim

I have amassed quite the scale collection in my home, so when Smart Weigh offered me another one for review, I figured I might as well put my experience to use and accept the offer.

The scale is sleek and very nice looking, with dimensions of 7 7/8" x 7 7/8" x ½". The display is LCD, with a black background with large, light numerals. While it gives measurements in Grams, Ounces and Pounds, the display indicates "ml", "g", "fl oz", and "lb, oz". I'm a little baffled by this because a scale measures mass, and milliliters and fluid ounces are volume measurements. In this case, the "ml" and "g" units seem to both read mass in grams, and the "fl oz" setting is actually ounces. The scale is more than accurate enough for a kitchen scale (measuring to the nearest whole gram).

I have one gripe with this scale, though it’s not serious enough to cause me to reduce the star rating. My complaint is that I'd like to have seen the more common AA or AAA batteries used instead of the less readily available CR2032. It’s a little strange that I've reviewed a large number of Smart Weigh scales, and they almost all operate on AA or AA batteries.

I reviewed a competitor’s kitchen scale that had the same odd liquid measurements as this one does, and it also takes the same CR2032 batteries. Actually the displays look identical, which makes me wonder if the innards of the scales are the same. The Smart Weigh scale beats the other scale I reviewed in that it is bigger, so I can set my 2 gallon mixing bowl on the scale and still read the display, and the Smart Weigh scale is considerably less expensive (at time of review) than the competing scale. I gave the competitor’s scale four stars and made it my go-to kitchen scale. Having now had the opportunity to test the Smart Weigh scale, I’m going to be replacing the competitor’s scale with the Smart Weigh.

This is indeed a sleek scale and it is simple to operate and very accurate. It is useful not only in the kitchen but for packages and general use.

The platform is a gently-brushed stainless steel in a titanium color. The display and buttons are inset and the front and rear of the platform slope slightly, giving it a very streamlined appearance. Overall dimensions are 7 7/8 x 7 7/8 in. so it doesn't take up much space on the counter but can accommodate most kitchen containers.

Most of all, I appreciate the easy to read blue LCD screen, with numbers a full 3/4 in. tall.

The controls are very easy to use. The power button also controls the tare function and if it is held down for a few seconds, powers off. There is also an auto-off feature after a minute to preserve battery life.

The scale weighs up to 11 lb. or 5 kg in increments of 0.1 oz. or 1 g. It is as accurate at weighing 10 g as it is at weighing 10 lb.

Two CR2032 button batteries are included, but don't forget to pull the plastic strip that preserves battery life from the battery compartment.
